Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ae Ceramics?
Ae Ceramics is a studio located on the coast of Maine in Boothbay Harbor—where a small team handcrafts sea‑inspired pottery. The pieces reinterpret natural coastal forms (oysters, shells, sea urchins) into functional art such as dinnerware and tabletop accessories.
Who is the artist behind Ae Ceramics?
The studio was founded by Alison Evans, who trained at Rhode Island School of Design and worked in New York before moving to Maine. Inspired by the coastal environment, she designs the forms and oversees the creative process. The team now includes five people plus one very special St. Bernard mascot in the studio.
What inspires the designs?
Inspiration stems from coastal life—oyster shells, barnacles, razor clams, sea urchins, and other marine forms. Alison creates unique shapes and crystal‑inspired glazes that echo nature’s patterns and textures.
What types of products are available?
Ae Ceramics offers various series including Oyster, Round, Razor Clam, Sea Urchin, Sea Clam, as well as sinks, teapots, containers, vases, ornaments, gift sets, and gift cards.
What are the glaze and color options?
Each series comes in signature glaze combinations like Mint & Charcoal, Abalone & Tortoise, Mint & Tortoise, Pearl, Sea Foam, Porcelain White, and Slate. Glaze choices are offered across the collections.
How are the ceramics made?
Materials & Forming: All pieces begin with porcelaneous stoneware clay. Round items are wheel-thrown; others are made using RAM press, press molds, or slip cast molds, depending on shape and size.
Finishing: After drying and bisque-firing, pieces are sanded and waxed. The glazes are painted, poured and dipped to create unique patterns.
Final firing: Glaze firing reaches approximately 2300 °F. After cooling, bottoms are sanded and ground flat.
Is each piece unique?
Yes. Because crystalline glaze involves variables like application thickness and kiln conditions, every piece develops a distinct pattern—making each one-of-a-kind.
What happens with imperfect items?
Flawed pieces (e.g., cracked or warped during processing) are labeled “Seconds” and sold at discounted prices. Some customers appreciate these as part of the studio’s story.
What is the typical shipping timeline?
Ae Ceramics aims to ship orders within one week of purchase. However, since pieces are handmade and often made-to-order, inventory may be limited and could take 4-6 weeks for delivery. Rush orders can be accommodated on request, though not always possible.
Can I visit the studio or store?
Yes. There's an AE Home Store and working production studio at 93 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Visitors can meet the makers and learn about the process.
